Job Description

Job Purpose:
The Guidance Leader has a key role within the school to co-ordinate the best possible educational experience for a particular cohort of students.

Key Tasks:

  • Co-ordinate and manage the work of the guidance team of student personal tutors.
  • Take an active part in the staff welfare and professional development of the tutor team.
  • Support tutors and subject teachers in the maintenance of good discipline through the implementation of the school behaviour policy and advising/ supporting staff on behaviour management techniques.
  • Support tutors and students through regular visits to tutor rooms.
  • Set appropriate agendas for meetings and workshops and arrange publication of brief minutes (noting action points and timescale), to the team, Leadership Group and other appropriate colleagues.
  • Report proposals and the views of senior colleagues to the team.
  • Liaise with SENCO and Student Services to monitor students receiving additional support and make appropriate referrals.
  • Be responsible for the ordering, distribution and care of learning materials used for tutorial work.
  • Ensure that personal tutors encourage every student to feel that the school is doing everything possible to foster their academic and social capabilities to the full.
  • Be responsible for the compliance with the school’s Health and Safety policy in tutor rooms, year base, offices and corridors and in any activity with students on or off the site organised by the team.
  • Liaise with parents and students as required. Arrange meetings with parents to explain general issues relevant to the group (e.g. work experience) and to discuss the progress of individual students
  • Arrange parents’ evenings in consultation with the Admin Team and Leadership Team.
  • Liaise with Citizenship Co-coordinator/Head of Sixth Form to organise the planning delivery and review of the Citizenship programme.
  • To operate database to keep accurate and up to date student records and amend as necessary. To complete data returns as required.
  • Co-ordinate the assessment data and target setting for students within the cohort.
  • Prepare reports and references for students including confidential court / social service / medical reports.
  • Liaise closely with relevant outside agencies: Education Welfare, Social Services, the Careers Service, etc. Organise for an appropriate representative to attend professionals’ meetings.
  • Co-ordinate all information received from staff, parents and outside agencies regarding individual students and ensure that this information is distributed appropriately.
  • Maintain an overview of student response to the whole curriculum and advise Faculties on coursework bottlenecks etc.
  • Monitor attendance and punctuality of students in the year group. Set individual and group targets for improvement in consultation with tutors and Social Inclusion team. Assist with registration periods.
  • Know all students in your area as well as possible and become a person who students feel they can consult.
  • Ensure that high standards of work, behaviour and dress code are maintained.
  • Monitor student progress through interim reports and profiles, intervening to support the raising of achievement.
  • Organise a programme of work reviews to focus upon student achievement in line with school policy.
  • Supervise students who are on report.
  • Ensure that the completion of academic work is monitored through regular tutor checks on Student Planners.
  • Take steps to prevent bullying and support victims of bullying.
  • Promote a positive identity within the group through the organisation of assemblies, extra-curricular activities and year group events, e.g. special lectures, visiting speakers and social events (including the annual celebration ball).
  • Ensure that individual student files are maintained.

    General
  • Help maintain a quiet working atmosphere throughout the school and in particular work areas.
  • To have a good knowledge and understanding of Every Child Matters.
  • To be a member of the Guidance Leaders’ Group.
  • To undertake those responsibilities and duties which may be required from time to time, which are commensurate with the level of this appointment.

· Able to work with a variety of software packages.

Salary Package
