Have you a Stategy in your Job Hunting?

Monday March 21, 2011 at 6:42pm
Are you totally happy with your current approach to finding your next role or position when leaving the Forces? If so, and you're getting the results then fantastic, but if you're getting nowhere. have you actually taken a step back to see what needs changing? We know this sounds obvious but in the blinding light of bookmarking / registering with countless websites and firing CVs in all directions, are you reserving time to analyse your strategy?

It's just as important as the applying itself and will really help next time you sit down to job search and think "where do I start?!" A spreadsheet is a great tool for this - study how many jobs you see potential in every week, how many do you apply to, do you always customise your CV and covering letter from top to bottom? If so does this make a difference? Who gave you feedback and who didn't?

This is just the start of the detail you could go into to ensure you're doing the job of finding a job properly. If you're doing none of these then you can bet someone else is, and beating you to the post in the process…..

As always with these employment BLOGS, have you any tips or advice you can share?

Hi Dominic, A couple of helpful points to consider there. You'll be aware that many sites will use a CV that one has previously uploaded. Do you have any suggestions for the format of that CV, or should we tailor our CV for each and every job, bearing in mind there might be more than one job in the 'basket'?...

Hi Peter, interesting points, my advice would be to have a strong generic CV that has keywords embedded within it for opportunities that you maybe seeking, which will come up in searches that recruiters would potentially use for a position. They could be in your profile statement, i.e. Versatile Senior Manager seeking an opportunity in an Operational, Logistical, facilities management role………… Straight away that covers four possible search options for a recruiter in one small sentence. To continue… ...

Again, my advice is that your CV does need to be tailored for every job that you apply for. By not doing so, you can seriously run the risk of getting passed by for a role, especially if the viewer does not read deeper into your generic CV. Also, be very careful of leaving jobs in a ‘basket’, two recent applicants for two different vacancies I was dealing with did so, and when they went back to apply a couple of days later the positions had closed. On a separate note, I have formatted your forms and submitted you for the role we discussed! Will update you as soon as feedback received. ...
