Advice from those Who have left the Armed Services

Wednesday February 4, 2009 at 9:15am

I left the Army in Apr 08 and not being able to find what I wanted in the place I wanted surprised myself by setting up as an interim manager and independent consultant. It was, and sometimes is, quite frightening but the freedom is great after being so tightly controlled by the personel branches. The biggest challenge is overcoming the "yes but we want someone who has done the exact same job before" attitude, the biggest advantage is that the military training and culture sets us up so well to see off the competition given the chance.

Having been helped on the way myself, I am happy to chat with any of your candidates who might be considering interim management or freelance consultancy.

Philip B

Whilst I did not use Gemini to find a job, I would be happy to answer questions any prospective service leaver has if they are considering moving to Asia, specifically China or HK.

I am now employed in HK following a six month job hunt in 2008, but it was a far harder road than I would ever have imagined possible.

I could go on for a long time commenting on the times I have heard this. Dont get me wrong I am not making light of the challenges, but we all come from a background of making it happen and outside of the forces we encounter some very blinkered and single minded people, my advice is, believe you can do it and go for it 'a civvy is a small challenge to be overcome with minimum effort' . We need more people to send us their experiences of the challenges they faced making the transition and how they overcame them....
